Higurashi: When They Cry - For Nintendo Game Boy
A work-in-progress port of Higurashi: When They Cry to the Nintendo Game Boy.
Currently, the novel is readable up to the end of the first day of the first question arc (roughly 30-60 minutes, depending on reading speed).
Due to the sheer immensity of this project, we anticipate the final release filling several maxed-out Game Boy cartridges. Think of it like a Final Fantasy VII type situation! :p
Character art is being done by Sydie. Programming and bitcrunching is being done by croweaver :) All assets are property of 07th Expansion and ryukishi07!

Sent here by a very enthusiastic robin.^^ Can't wait to see how this is coming along. Just trying this is gloriously insane! Congratulations!
Only found this game today, absolutely love what you've done and wish you luck in your upcoming projects!
<3 thank you!
are there plans to port the other volumes to the gameboy ?
Hi there! I set myself a goal to at least finish the first chapter, any subsequent ones would have to be separate cartridges due to space constraints. I would love to port the entire vn, but would probably need some help since there's a lot of really manual work that goes into transcribing the text. Thanks for asking :)

Epic.
Hi, it was truly a pleasant surprise to find this. I was wondering if, once finished, there would be a possibility of porting it to Game Gear (or even Mega Drive). The development tools have made everything easier, and I also know people who would be happy to do these ports. Higurashi never had a game released on a Sega console due to the era in which the franchise was born, so it would be a dream come true for me. Cheers.
Hi! That could definitely be done, though it's not something I'll be taking on myself :p
The reason I picked Gameboy as my target platform was 1) the ease of use of Gameboy Studio, and 2) it's the console I have the most nostalgia for :). At it's core, Higurashi is mostly text, and you could probably make a Commodore PET port if you put in the time.
I'm happy you responded and it opens up the possibility of this happening. I replayed this port a lot, and it felt very natural. I was just thinking about Higurashi and it reminded me of you.
If the port to, I don't know, Mega Drive ever happens, there's a tool called SGDK by Stephane-D, where ports have been and are being created without thinking about it. I hope this will eventually become something. Big hug, and sorry for the question.
omg!!!!!! good luck with the development everypony <3
Im guess the save implementing for going different cartridges would be like LoZ Oracle games?
Hi! There shouldn't be a need to track progress between carts, since Higurashi is a perfectly linear VN. If for some reason I do find myself wanting to do that (for instance, maybe tracking Tips that the player has read?), I'll probably use a password system.
